Tejas’ Gallery :: Geek Dinner

Tejas’ Gallery :: Geek Dinner

OK, we had the geek dinner last Friday. To start with, thanks to all who managed to find time, energy and courage to join us after a tiring day and while it was still raining in Melbourne. Well it was not a great turnout, at just 60%. But it was great catching up with Nirav, Matt,Darren, Will and Thomas Williams who travelled nearly 45 Kms if not more to get to the dinner. We should have another one at the end of November I guess, which will give us enough time. So with 6 of us there, we took some fun pictures, which are posted on my gallery.

One More RSS reader

Reader

OK, I know. I know that you have read the news about Google opening up it’s news aggregator tool on 100 other blogs before too. I just wanted to post this for post sake but a reminder to myself that I will blog more about this tool in the future when it’s more usable than what it is at this stage. It’s not exactly working with the OPML file that I have got and I am sure things will get better in the upcoming days and weeks. So will blog in detail about this tool in the future.

Instablogs finally shows up

Aha, Instablogs has finally showed up and launched. First of all Congratulations to all involved. Sounds like a great initiative and good luck.

Here are few initial suggestions for you guys:-

1. When you mess up in public, be polite and give your readers a reason well in time and not when you really feel like. You guys could have even just posted a explanatory comment on your own blog for the reason in the delay. I agree with BlogNetworkWatch on this one and their comments. ( actually one of my comments are mentioned on BlogNetworkWatch too, I realised)
2. I don’t know who you guys are. I like to know whose network I am visiting and whose blogs I am reading. How about a “About Us” section or a nice post detailing who you guys are and what your intentions are?
3. I know you guys have a category called “about instablogs” but I am getting an error message when I get there http://www.instablogs.com/category/About%20Instablogs/ .

Update:-
” I cannot post something like “it’s” in your comment. I get a MySQL error message. Hope you guys fix it soon”

Well, I sound negative, but I fall into the category “people are real angry with us”. But again wish you all the best with the Network.Looking forward to see the great content that you are promising on the network. May be after few days I might just start loving your blogs and network,

Rajesh Shetty gives pointers on what to do when you start a blog

Life Beyond Code :: I started a blog; now what?

Rajesh Shetty author of Beyond Code gives us pointers of what to do when you start a blog. He is right, many people start the blog because people force them to have a blog ( I am guilty, I sometimes over Evangelise blogs to my non geek friends) or they are carried in the hype of the buzz word “blog”.

I think I really agree with Rajesh’s first point. Giving ROII (Return of Investment for an Interaction) is very important. I don’t know how much return my blog posts gives to my users but I know for myself that I frequent those blogs that are giving me my return for my investment of time. This return can be in the form of links to other informative blogs or services and if it teaches me something that I was not aware of.

Although we think that Rajesh’s points are very common, they are very effective and helps to make a blog and blogger known to others. So let’s see if I made a right decision by linking to Rajesh’s post according to the list of points that Rajesh has posted.

1. Yes, I think the points are important from blogging perspective and I am sure it will be better for my readers too to know these points.

2. This was worth linking

3. I wanted to comment on Rajesh’s blog, but have to register to comment. Nah, too much time consuming and not sure if it gives me any other benefit, so thought of extending the conversation here.

4. I do.

5. I am speaking from my experience, so I am the right person to say what I said before :).

6. Agree.

What I got out of Yahoo’s acquisition of Upcoming

Upcoming.org: Melbourne Geek dinner at Gopal’s Vegeterian Restaurant (Friday, October 7, 2005)

The blogoshere is buzzing with the news that Yahoo took on Upcoming.org. That’s sweet but what I got out of this deal is access to a system where I can list events that I am organising and that I am aware off in my city Melbourne. The system will make it easier for me to see who is coming and who is not. People can even comment on the events and let me know if they can come to the events along with any other comment. This can be handy if they don’t want to bother registering to the website.

The site will be much more better once it gets integrated with my Yahoo credentials.
