Is this a correct heading?

I read an article on Wired News with the title “This Blog is 100 Percent Solar”. I don’t think the author has made any connections whatsoever in the article to blog’s and them running on solar powered data centers, so then why use such title? Although I learned from this article that there are providers who provide solar powered Data Centers, which I did not was an available option.

Point is have people just started to use the word ‘Blog’ because they think it’s a hype word and people will read the article if it has the word ‘Blog’ in it? For me they are loosing more credibility doing this. I think the title should be something like “Is your blog 100% solar?”.

VoIP Buster

Found a new tool to play with on the Internet and it is called VoIP Buster. Well the best thing is it offers free calls to local numbers in quite a few countries and Australia, US, UK, Netherlands are just few of them. I tested it out by calling my friends on land line here in Melbourne and it seems to be working quite well. There is very minor delay, but where it is’nt? This means that I can save some dollars on my interstate phone calls now and I can make more friends overseas (my wife will be happy). When will India come on the list for free calls?

Let me know what your reviews are. Seen anything better, than let me know.

Contacts don’t show up when creating new message in Outlook

It has been few times so far that due to reinstallation of systems and few other problems, address don’t show up when creating new message and adding contact email address. We might also get a error message as follows:-

The address list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or you do not have permissions. For information on how to remove this folder from the Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Outlook Help.

I tried many things before returning to Microsoft website for details and this is the KB what I found. The solution is very simple, although would’nt have guessed it myself. I hope this link help many others who might be facing the same problems and hitting their head against the wall.

My 3 Minutes at Start.com

I saw Robert Scoble’s post about Start.com and the link to Channel 9 post. Without reading the whole post I quickly jumped on Start.com to be faced by weird questions that did not interest me at all. Well filling out the questions wasted my one minute. But I am impressed with what MSN team has done by linking them to MSN Search. That’s good effort to show the capabilities of your search engine and to market it. MSN guys sorry, but I will put down the direct URL in public so people don’t waste time filling out stupid questions, although I like what you have done with the questions too. The direct URL for now is http://www.start.com/myw3b/. Here is what I think.

–> I like the speed at which the site responds. It’s awesome!
–> Did you copy Google Personalisation site or it was always on your mind? I like the interface, more space for more content.
–> Any plans to bring Hotmail email intergration to this page (just like Google does). This might be one more chance to keep your Hotmail customers, seeing that you guys are not doing much innovation on that side of the business compared to other providers, but that’s another story.
–> The RSS feed should be found even if we just punch in the URL of the website we want the content added, well it does not work. Do you think I will go and find RSS feed URL? Not convenient and nor can I be bothered. That part needs the work. Hey! I think that’s the most important part of the site, it would be atleast for me.
–> Can I guess that you guys will integrate this with .NET passport soon? As no one likes to configure the feeds on different browsers if they handle more than one machine and use more than one browser.
–> You could have added a feature of exporting OPML
–> IT DOES NOT WORK ON MY OPERA, WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU GUYS?
–> What’s something new that you guys provide here? All the stuff on here is already in the market.

Although I can say the product is good, for new comers to the Feed and Search engine users, but not too cool to keep a person like myself stick to it. If you can some positive critisimn, than this site provides nothing new that I should leave other sites which is doing the same. I would rate “My Yahoo” a bit above this site. Show me and the world something new, that will keep me talking about how much I love some feature on your site for atleast one week. For a chance do something unique that other’s have’nt done so far. Provide a feature that is unique to Start.com or MSN. Good luck guys. For now I will stick to Google, Bloglines, Newsgator.

I felt as half dead

From last night I was feeling half dead, as my main computer stopped responding. I am no hardware guru, but I still opened the case and tried everything possible I could think of. Actually there was on Video on monitor neither Power on Self Test. I was desperate! I called my friends hoping that they would know something that I did’nt. As a network engineer I deal with hardware fair bit, but this was making me crazy. I impatiently waited till morning to take the computer to a doctor. The doctor was not really help, as doctors did’nt have a nurse to help him with the surgery ( the technician did not come to the shop). The processor was the only thing that I did not touch, so I recommended the doctor that if he can somehow check the processor is working or dead. He removed the heat sink to find out that the processor was out of the socket and not well connected into the socket. Walla!, this did the trick. Initially I felt as if I will have to stay without the computer on the weekend, but not anymore. The computer is fixed now and back to life and I feel life in myself too. My wife says I am just a dead geek! Yes, my computer is one of the precious things for me (very precious). She even told my friends that while the computer was not working, the atmosphere in the house was like someone was dead in the house, well my computer was half dead!.

But, I am back to normal and happy to see it like this :).

Now I know the creator of DNS

You came to this page or you are reading this message because of the help your system got from DNS. We do rely heavily on DNS and till date it never occured to me to find more information on origin of DNS (Domain Name System). Today as I was reading the news on BBC site, I read the news that Paul Mockapetris (also read here) was the creator of DNS system and he is honoured by ACM Sigcomm lifetime award.

100 Salutes to Paul for his creation, I know how much I rely on DNS system in the office and everywhere I go.
